Although I prefer Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert is pretty hilarious.

This was really good! It's based on the writers' real-life experiences of being nannies to rich people in NYC. I really enjoyed it.

I read this because I was desperate for something while home for Christmas. It is an 'expose' of the terrible treatment nannies and their charges receive from wealthy, city-dwelling parents. The story line is fairly entertaining but the authors had a sort of holier-than-thou attitude all the while seeming to lust after the kind of lifestyle the parents have. I found it annoying, though if you like quick reads about skinny girls living in Manhattan, you'll probably enjoy it.

'Gulliver's Travels Review'

entry by...drneevil     updated...Mar 03, '08     spoilers...minor

BLURB

Shipwrecked and cast adrift, Lemuel Gulliver wakes to find himself on Lilliput, an island inhabited by little people, whose height makes their quarrels over fashion and fame seem ridiculous. His subsequent encounters – with the crude giants of Brobdingnag, the philosophical Houyhnhnms and brutish Yahoos – give Gulliver new, bitter insights into human behaviour. Swift’s savage satire views mankind in a distorted hall of mirrors as a diminished, magnified and finally bestial species, presenting us with an uncompromising reflection of ourselves.

A Modest Proposal I have to admit caught me off guard with the subject in which he addressed. It had me laughing to be honest, absolutely preposterous. Gulliver's Travels os also extremely good, and quite entertaining.

'My thoughts'

entry by...krin5292     updated...Dec 07, '07     spoilers...n/a

This was a funny and poignant novel about finding life in death. I liked the characters Charlie Asher, Sophie, Minty Fresh, and the Emperor of San Francisco. I especially liked how Charlie finds courage to face his fears as he both confronts the "sewer harpies" and learns how to be a good father to Sophie.

Another fantastic Christopher Moore book! I couldn't put it down. It has the now-classic Christopher Moore humor, even when dealing with the role of Death in our society. When Charlie's wife dies, leaving him with their infant daughter, he finds out that he is a "Death Merchant", and his job is to collect people's soul vessels and hold them until their next owner comes along. Strange things continue to happen...
One of the funniest themes in the book is that of the beta male- the secondary males to alpha males, who still sometimes get lucky. Charlie is the consummate beta male and this theme comes up repeatedly.
Generally amusing and touching. A nice serious touch as well as the humor (like Lamb, another one of my favorites).

'Dirty Job'

entry by...Island_Mike     updated...Jan 31, '08     spoilers...n/a

Christopher Moore speaks to me. His satirically twisted perspective brings the craziness that touches us into crisp focus. In "Dirty Job," Christopher explores our relationship to the metaphysical forces of death with a comic perspective all his own.

'Bridget Jones' Diary - THe Edge of Reason Review'

entry by...drneevil     updated...May 24, '07     spoilers...minor

BLURB
This sequel concerns Bridget Jones, a single, girl-about-town on an optimistic but doomed quest for self-improvement. If she could just get down to 8st 7lb, stop smoking and develop inner poise, all would be resolved.

The problem, of course, with sequels, is that they are so often comparable unfavourably with the original. Sadly this is the case here. While I loved re-visiting Bridget, I found her to be a little dizier, a little more dense and a little, well, less that I had previously found her to be.

Still, a fun read, if not as engrossing as the first.
