An absorbing tale of three suburban couples and their failed marriages. There's Sarah, who was a bisexual feminist in college but has now married Richard, 20 years her senior, to escape a dead-end job; Todd, a handsome, stay-at-home dad who can't bring himself to care about repeatedly failing the bar exam; and Larry, a former cop who retired at 33 after mistakenly killing a 13-year-old boy. All of their lives collide with unexpected consequences the summer a convicted child molester moves into the neighborhood. Sarah and Todd have an extended affair, and Larry becomes obsessed with harassing the sex offender, while Richard turns into a devoted member of the online "Slutty Kay" fan club. Absorbing and the movie, which follows he book almost exactly, is as well.

People meet, fall in love, and get married, to eventually become estranged, but this relationship is unlike any I have ever read about before. Our narrator (never named) and Dennis, both fortysomething, meet at a Thanksgiving dinner and hit it off with a passion and connection that brings them shortly to marriage. Dennis has money and a Brooklyn Heights town house, into which our narrator moves all her possessions, including the photography equipment with which she makes her living. Dennis's demeanor, which has always seemed enthusiastic to extremes, becomes more extreme; wild gestures that caused spills now cause bodily injury. More often than not, he damages someone other than himself. Their friends desert them; injured squash partners move away--far away. She comes to the realization after split lips, bruises, broken bones--all accidentally delivered--that if she doesn't do something, she will be killed. She considers a hit man, then running away, but her love for Dennis always stops her. Their pets die. She researches poisons. And then . . . But you must read this funny, bizarre novel yourself!

I picked up this book because reviews said that it wasn't a classic Steven King novel, and not as much horror as a sad love story with some fantasy. I found this to be mostly true. There were a few suspenseful parts that I felt cheated and that this was, in fact, a horror story, but in the end it was about the relationship between a dead man and his wife.
Parts of this story were great, but I felt like he was not fully able to pull away from the horror. The fantasy/science fiction theme wasn't fully developed and could have added a lot to the story.
My first Steven King book. He really can write and create a picture of what's going on, and I liked the style of slowly revealing things (although I felt like I was figuring stuff out before I was supposed to). A good read.

Compared to most of Stephen King's books, Lisey's Story does not qualify for horror fiction, though it does have a few stomach-curdling moments. Basically it is the story of a woman who spent many happy years married to a sucessful writer (now dead) who is having some problems closing his estate. Stephen King does a very good job getting "inside" this woman & showing the action from her point of view. And there is a lot of action.

This book should not even be on my "read" list since I was unable to finish it. But I don't want to forget that I already tried to read it and didn't succeed. I am not a Stephen King fan but was encouraged to read this book because of a review that I read. Just not my kind of book, I guess. Much of the book seemed to be overwritten in order to make it novel length and I just gave up.

Pretty good story. I enjoyed the premise of a woman "haunted" by her memories of the past; and her own willingness to forget uncomfortable truths. Like most King novels, the characters are well written and believable. However, like most King novels, at times the narrative seems to plod along, and I'm left with the feeling that the author is trying to drag out the story.
