'Great reference book'

entry by...LittleLotte815     updated...Apr 08, '07     spoilers...n/a

The title explains it all: this is a book about books. It is a reference guide to influential, important, interesting novels that have impacted and delighted readers for centuries. Each novel is described in a short article, with accompanying images and quotes. Great for use in compiling a To Read list (mine has about 250 on it).

Brilliant source book for excellent fiction throughout the centuries. It is broken up in each century starting from the 1700's, and gives a brief review and some nice trivia also!

'Detail detail detail'

entry by...slowtostart     updated...Jan 04, '07     spoilers...n/a

I love the subject area of linguistics especially the development of language over time and that's the reason I picked up this book in the first place. I'll admit I did have to look a lot of the terminology up at first but once I got into the swing of things this was such an interesting read on the development of western languages in Europe. It answered questions (in great detail) like when did we stop speaking latin everyday? And why didn't German or French win over English? Was there ever one root langauge?

Definitely not for those who are interested in the history side of things only, this could probably be used as a supplementary text for a linguistics student. Still, good if you're into that type of thing.

this is such a funny book! sort of a modern spin on the 1950's ettiquette book, don't take things too seriously when reading this or you'll yell at it. Covering absolutely everything imaginable, you could flip it open to any page and find both useful tips on shoe maintenance and funny strategies for surviving office dramas.

I've given a few copies of this book to friends I knew would appreciate it for long flights and other tedious times. It's a light read, even the most anti-reading person will love this book.
