Not half as good as Myra, but not bad. Some clunkiness, but also lots of that precise bitchiness I so love Vidal for. Ending continues to disturb me - rape scene very well written.

Normally, I think every creative endeavor can be improved through the addition of gayness. But strangely, I think this book is much more engaging and winning when it is focusing on how the narrator's religion (they are fundamentalist Christians in 1960's England), isolates her and her mother from the rest of the world.

The gay coming out and being rejected by family and friends is so old and done. It bores me.

I like the fantasy story bits when they don't too directly parallel the events of the plot. When they're a little en point, they are overly obvious as a cute storytelling technique, rather than illuminating something one didn't already understand.

I really, really enjoyed this. Very clearly written, hilarious, devastating, woven so seamlessly into fairytale ... very sexy, very tragic.

Well, sure it was funny, and I enjoyed the metaphysical timey-wimey elements, but it was no Myra, and smacked of being written solely to self-congratulate. Poor, Gore.

This blew me away, but I remain very baffled by the sudden turn at the end. It's been a very long time since I've had such a crush on a fictional character, but Myra's return to Myron kind of threw that all back in my face. The edition I have contains the sequel, Myron; I plan to read it soon, but I don't know how soon. I think I need a little while to mull this over.

Otherwise, Gore Vidal has made it into my list of top whatever people in the world. This was so bright, so funny, so alive, so visceral and, crucially, very, very interesting. Go Gore.

This book takes place during WWII, and is about the lives of three women and a man. Very well written and hard to put down. One of my favorite books of the past few years. I highly recommend Fingersmith by the same author as well.

I've started this book twice and still have been unable to finish it. For reasons I cannot identifiy, I just can't become interested and feel as though I'm just wasting time. This is the second book by this author that I could not get interested in, so I guess I should give it up.

I have tried twice to read this book and each time became disinterested about 1/4 into the book. I cannot define the reason that I'm disinterested, but just feel that I am wasting my time. This is the second book I have been unable to finish by this author, so I guess I should just give it up.
