Whether it is talking about diaries, muffins, bunburrying (spelling?), or three-volume novels, this play is perfectly wonderful. I saw the movie first (with Reese Witherspoon, Judy Dench, and Colin Firth and it's also great) and it made me run to read the play.Hillarious.

Witty and buoyant comedy of manners is brilliantly plotted from its effervescent first act to its hilarious denouement, and filled with some of literature's most famous epigrams. Widely considered Wilde's most perfect work

A perfect example of what a play can do that a novel can't. Because it is character driven and depends enormously on what a particular actor brings to a given role (or what the reader brings at a given time), this play is always a new experience, either read or seen.

Finished 7/08

Another masterpiece by Oscar Wilde that scorns and reveals the ridiculousness of society. Wonderful and preposterous play

Another WS play I need to reread. I don't think I appreciate it as much as I could.

Lear is fascinating. I believe him to be one of Shakespeare's most complex characters. Parent/Child relationships and bears, oh my! One of Jane Smiley's best novels, "A Thousand Acres," is a modern-day telling of the play.

'Father Doesn't Know Best'

entry by...jubjub42     updated...Nov 18, '08     spoilers...n/a

I never read this in school, so I watched Laurence Olivier's movie, studied Cliff Notes, and read the play out loud. I liked it.

It's like a Chinese puzzle box. You want to saw the damn thing open and quickly get what is inside. The play scenes seem so strange, but then you realize that like a Zen parable the pith is not internal-- it is the process. You learn to see in the characters because of that process and that leads to insight that is unavailable to others who are physically or psychically blinded by their need to "spin". So had I sawed the box open there was nothing inside that hadn't been revealed at first. I was only able to see these characters because the play's process.

The play's emphasis on sincerity seems trite in today's spin world. Yet my remembrance of Vietnam, Iraq, and Enron made this value for me a modern message. People can lose their kingdoms, sanity, health and make miserable those around them because of their arrogance and inability to see another view. They are blinded by their arrogance and adherence to wrong views.

As a play I liked it best for its coherence. I think you can get to the kernel of some plays through Cliff Notes, but not here. The story built evenly through language, scenes and character development; unlike JULIUS CAESAR (my favorite S. play for quotes)which had to my way of thinking, fragmented subplots and uneven scenes. Yet, LEAR seemed to lack the great quotes, I liked in JULIUS CAESAR. I so much wanted Kent to tell Lear "the eye sees not itself but by reflection only", but that might have led to his death instead of banishment. Ah well... there's enough death here, for any right thinking James Bond, but unlike Bond, that is not the point.
