'Good, but...'

I did really like it, but I felt a little let down. I didn't to see how this could be considered magical realism, although the story is certainly fantastic. I really enjoyed the humor and found that the story was captivating. I think that it definitely deserves much of the praise it gets, but overall it left me feeling like a tiny bit of something was missing.

This collection of short stories is predominately about middle-age Jewish men. Some of the stories take place in London, some in America, some in Israel.
Like all short stories, they had a bit of a strange, unexplained air about them. I liked that all of the characters and storylines were different, even while dealing with the common themes of sexuality and religion.
A good collection of short stories, but I feel like I missed out on a bit since I'm not Jewish.

'War's impact'

entry by...roach808     updated...Aug 21, '07     spoilers...none

The whole novel is written around one event, around one evening. It is a look into war, human nature, guilt and dedication. From the author of "Night," this is very different than his best known novel, but no less important.

This book chronicles the history of one city, now part of Greece, from its founding ot the present day. It has been settled and built in by Christians, Jews, and Muslims. For a long time it was part of the Ottoman Empire, and Muslims were dominate, until it became part of Greece and there was a massive Muslim/Christian exchange between Turkey and Greece. The Muslims were forced out of the city. During WWII, the Jews were mostly sent to concentrations camps during the German occupation.
Before all of that, all three religions lived mostly in peace within the city with the usual squabbling.
It was interesting to read Greek history that wasn't ancient history. I also know so little about the Ottoman empire that it was quite interesting to read about.

This is a novel about a girl finding herself, dating all kinds of men, and moving through a series of careers. Lots of parts are extremely funny, and some are kind of sad. I very much enjoyed how she grew over the course of the book.
At some points, I found myself very annoyed at her. She drifts around and seems to have no purpose or drive, which makes it hard for me to feel sympathy from her when she's drifting around.
