'Faerie?'

entry by...sylvanfae     updated...Jan 27, '07     spoilers...minor

Fun, but flawed. My kind of subject matter, but kind of lacklustre.

Like, why did the Faeries celebrate weddings and funerals in a chapel-like setting? Why did they even live in a human-looking stone castle? Why the gender stereotypes of the warring males and the stay-at-home females gathering flowers for the morning room? This is FAERIE! It should be more wild and less human.

Where's the magic? The faeries could have been humans only with green skin and pointy ears. What was magic other than what King Obrey did to Queen Dymphna? There was very little sense of otherness. *sigh*

Also, I was hoping to figure out what the deal was with the Amadan. Guess I have to read the whole series. I was planning to anyway.

Other than such things, it was fun and the art was lovely.

'Woot!'

entry by...sylvanfae     updated...Dec 18, '06     spoilers...none

I read the last book first (The Sandman: Endless Nights), haha! But now I've gotten my hands on this, the first one. Endless Nights made me a fan (scrumptious!) and this just confirms it. Even with the simpler stories and outdated artwork (some of it looks all 70's, ew!) it just built on my love for this series. I have to read the rest!

I found it amusing that the god characters in the book tend to look like David Bowie (trying to cast him much? if they make a movie...? lol) and near the end Dream starts looking exactly like Peter Murphy. I'm ok with that. My two fave musicians! Better than looking like Dr. Who (the old one), like he does in the beginning. LOL

I have to thank Gaiman for writing such mythopoeic fiction... grand, mystical, a balance of light and darkness... I TOTALLY get you, man!

I would love to see Gaiman work with deLint, someday.

I don't think I enjoyed this book as much as I did Persepolis one and two, probably because this group of women could almost be anywhere rather than the book being about Iran or her life.

A short, adorable glimpse into the lives of Iranian women of several ages set over afternoon tea. Though not the 3rd in the Persepolis series as anticipated it is another gem from this Iranian turned Parisian.

Not quite as good as Brian K. Vaughn's series "Y: The Last Man" - this one deals with a hero (anti-hero? semi-hero?) who can talk to machines. Still very much worth reading.

I'm not really familiar with many graphic novels, so I didn't really know what to expect from this one. I really enjoyed both the story and the style of the drawings. They didn't detract at all from the story, but instead greatly assisted it with it's simple representations of a child's story.
Parts of it were very amusing, but it also deals with the dark side of the revolution and the Iraq/Iranian war. I don't know much about that time period or the players involved, so I need to look that up.
I can't wait to read the sequels.

I was skeptical about a graphic novel, but really, this is ingenious and beautiful and wild and caring.

'Hmm...'

The manga had hints of intriguing drama, but didn't explore them very far. Maybe if you read the whole series they're explored. I started with this, the 17th volume, because that's all that was available at the library.

I would have loved this in Jr. High. Not really my sort of thing anymore.

I will probably try other volumes before I give up, though. Doesn't take long to read one.

I AM interested in watching the live-action Dorama, though. ^-^ Maybe even the anime.

So I thought I would give a manga a go, just to see what all the fuss was about. The problem is, I've never even been interested in graphic novels so I shouldn't have expected that this would grab me and convert me into a hardcore fan.

Apparently this is one of the most popular series of manga amongst English-speaking readers, and the artwork is extremely talented (considering the artist is the author as well, credit must be paid). But I must be past the target market for this kind of thing, even though I know several people a lot older than me who are into this stuff.

The story was extremely light-on and moved far too abruptly for my liking. I finished it in just over an hour which annoyed me considering how much I'd paid. I think I'll be giving this to a friend as a can't-have-on-my-shelf-as-evidence thing. I'm not trying to insult the people who read these, you're totally entitled to read what you want, and I'm glad you do, they're just so far from my taste that I didn't finish feeling annoyed or angry, just disappointed.
