'The Twilight Saga Book 4'

entry by...drneevil     updated...Dec 31, '08     spoilers...n/a

BLURB

To be irrevocably in love with a vampire is both fantasy and nightmare woven into a dangerously heightened reality for Bella Swan. Pulled in one direction by her intense passion for Edward Cullen, and in another by her profound connection to werewolf Jacob Black, she has endured a tumultuous year of temptation, loss and strife to reach the ultimate turning point. Her imminent choice to either join the dark but seductive world of immortals or pursue a fully human life has become the thread from which the fate of two tribes hangs.

Now that Bella has made her decision, a startling chain of unprecedented events is about to unfold with potentially devastating and unfathomable consequences. Just when the frayed strands of Bella's life - first discovered in TWILIGHT, then scattered and torn in NEW MOON and ECLIPSE - seem ready to heal and knit together, could they be destroyed. . .forever?

I love the way Stephenie Meyer wrote this series. Breaking Dawn put everything together in the series. It tied up most of the loose ends coming all the way from Twilight. The first half of the book had me a little scared because the author seemed to be beating about the bush a lot. Bella was going though her usual motions of whinning and wondering about been loved. She was also complaining about having the perfect story book wedding which made me roll my eyes a bit. I forsaw that Edward and Bella would finally get down to business after the wedding. I also forsaw that Edward would whine and want to stop because he thought he was hurting Bella and Bella would win the agruement eventually. but I did not predict the outcome of their union. I guess I have to work on my Alice abilities. The second section of the book was told from Jacob's perpective. I initally thought that was not going to work out but it ended up been okay and added a little something different to the book. I also became very interested in Jacob after this. I liked him from the previous books but I loved him in Breaking Dawn. Jacob finally imprinted, I was so glad this was not an ordinary occurance because nothing about Jake has been ordinary so far. Bella finally tranformed. About time. I also loved the conclusion of the book, it was very well written. I just hope the upcoming movies can do the series justice.

This book started off a little weird. But then I think everyone would agree that an 18 year old who gets pregnant to a vampire and pops out a rapidly maturing baby is a little strange. The second part of the book, when Bella is turned, is much better in my opinion.

One thing I felt was disappointing about this book was that the build up to Edward and Bella consummating their relationship (for want of a better phrase) never really reached a climax but fell rather flat and was over in a turn of a page. I do understand that this book is aimed at young teens but with television the way it is these days, I would have thought that Stephanie Meyer would at least describe the moment a wee bit, even if only in cliche metaphors and euphamisms. But then maybe she thought these things were better left to the imagination.

All in all, "Breaking Dawn" is a nice tie up to the "Twilight" series.

Wow. I love this book. Edward is just so endearing. I feel like stealing him from the book. Jacob's situation is just so heartbreaking. I also love Alice in the book. Bella is just amazing. The story keeps evovling, it brings out emotions in the reader. I highly recommend this book to fantasy and romance lovers. I cannot wait for Breaking Dawn to be released.

BLURB

Anita travels to New Mexico to investigate a series of supernatural attacks as a favor to her long-time friend, the assassin Edward. In the course of that investigation, Anita picks up many clues as to the enigmatic Edward's life and past, comes in contact with an alleged Aztec god, and attempts, as always, to sort out her own relationship with Jean-Claude and Richard.

A return to greatness, this book (finally) moves on with the world at large - we get more of Edward - far more than expected! We get crazy vampires, weird astec werewolves and lotsa blood and guts!

BLURB
Anita attempts to reconnect with her friends and allies after a lengthy separation, and to undo the damage caused by her absence. Even as Anita attempts to repair the damage and come to terms with her newly developing powers, she is also threatened by a series of attacks and disappearances within the shapeshifter community.

Sob, I'm basically reading porn at this point, sob. But the few elements of plot that aren't cut for graphic unnecessary sex are still compelling...

'Anita Blake Book 12 - Incubus Dreams Review'

entry by...drneevil     updated...May 22, '07     spoilers...minor

BLURB
Anita's romantic life undergoes a dramatic upheaval while she simultaneously attempts to assist the police in solving a series of vampire serial murders.

Anita continues to assist Jean-Claude with vampire politics, as Jean-Claude confronts a challenge from The Dragon and her offspring, Primo and as Anita and Jean-Claude realize that the vampires in town that follow Malcolm rather than Jean-Claude have not been bound by blood oath, leaving them as essentially unrestrained predators.

Anita's personal life becomes increasingly complex, both as a result of Anita's increasing ardeur and as a result of the personal problems of the various people involved. In particular, Nathaniel has decided that his relationship with Anita should advance to a sexual relationship, Damian continues to struggle with his role as Anita's vampire servant, and Anita's love/hate relationship with Richard remains as powerful as ever. Anita also must deal with jealousy from Jessica Arnett, a RPIT detective with a crush on Nathaniel, and with increasing distrust by various police officers as a result of her close relationship with the city's vampires and shapeshifters and as a result of her increasingly sexually-based abilities.

Mildly interesting again, but still far too much 'girlie' feelings and sex.

'Anita Blake Book 1 - Guilty Pleasures Review'

entry by...drneevil     updated...May 22, '07     spoilers...minor

BLURB
Anita Blake may be small and young, but vampires call her the Executioner. Anita is a necromancer and vampire hunter in a time when vampires are protected by law--as long as they don't get too nasty. Now someone's killing innocent vampires and Anita agrees--with a bit of vampiric arm-twisting--to help figure out who and why.

Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along--yet.

I loved this book - picked it up on holiday in Turkey and couldn't put it down. Buffy for grown ups, where bad guys were really bad, and vampires were a world apart.
Anita was feisty and tough, with a killer attitude. Using the necromancy as a back ground tool was even better - made it so matter of fact.

This series was recomended to me by a friend. She thought I would like it because of the vampires and were-animals. The series started out decent. Unfortunatly the farther I got into the series the more I felt the author had run out of storyline but was being pushed to continue with the series. With each new book the main character was sleeping with another person. Mind you not a different person.....another person. At one point she is sleeping with three vampires, a werewolf, and two wereleopards. Between all of the sex scenes and relationship problems there was no more "Vampire Hunter" to the series. It was just Anita Blake 400 pages of sex....not anything that I care to continue reading. That said I will not try her other series "Mary Gentry series" because from what I was told it is about a Fairy kingdom and Mary is fighting for the throne. The only way she can claim the throne is by becoming pregnant so she tries to find someone who can do just that.

BLURB
Unlike the previous thirteen novels, neither Anita's role as a Federal Marshal nor her job as a zombie animator plays any part in this novel. Instead, Anita must juggle a series of problems arising from her own increasing power, Jean-Claude's vampire politics, and her own personal life, complicated in this case by Anita's apparent pregnancy.
Anita's increasing powers continue to lead to new problems. In particular, Anita is attempting to select a pomme de sang from a variety of candidates, leading to a series of conflicts between various persons who wish to join her harem of lovers. In addition, she discovers that her ardeur has been shaping both her own and her lovers' feelings and personalities, making Anita question whether her love for Micah and Nathaniel is real. Finally, Anita discovers that she is a pan-were, and that in addition to being the dominant female of the local wolf and leopard pack, she is also Regina, or Queen, of the local werelion pack, leading to a conflict between the lions eager to become her Rex, or lion king.

Wow - over half the book manages to remain sex free, LKH does give in to her crutch at one point, but actually plot driven. What a relief!
