Interesting plot. Too many mundane details for my liking, and it should've ended fifty pages before it did (a loooong walk across a mountain), but still pretty good.

What a great fantasy book! Based in greek mythological "fact" - and the author obviously did his homework. The characters and the story work well with the mythology and Riordan even adds to it with a modern twist. I can't say enough about this book and I can't wait to read the second in the series. I think the book was much more fun to me now than it would have been if I had read it as a kid because having a background in the gods and myths made the story flow more easily and made it genuinely more interesting. However, I'm sure any young fantasy-fan can pick it up and have a great time.

this was a great way to start a new series, especially one that should pass up Harry Potter. It hooked me as soon as I started the first chapter. by the way, the chapter names are histarical.

'When will it begin???'

entry by...jeter998     updated...Nov 08, '09     spoilers...minor

I am going to review the book after I have read the entire thing. Normally it is difficult to write a review on a book that one has only read 1/5 of, but ithiss message is really urgent, I assure you. You often hear that such and such book was great, but stick with it because it takes awhile to start. I don't really understand that concept. Why not take out the part "before it all starts" and skip to the good stuff. Sure, we need an introduction, background and motivations for the characters, but how long does that really take? I'm on page 80, and the book hasn't started. Yes, Crowley you write beautifully about poor emo, just-lost-his-job Pierce Moffet and the world of the "Faraways," a random little town in the mountains where everyone seems to lust after their next door neighbor's wife. But honestly, if I wanted to read a book about small-town gossip meets romantic comedy, I would have. I want to know about the world of Aegypt, and why there is more than one history of the world. Oh John Crowley, why must you torture me so!!!

Apparently this book is "very well-written," and "an example of beautiful prose"-I agree wholeheartedly with this. However it doesn't have a plot to speak of(this is from many review on amazon.com). Well, damn. Why didn't I think of writing some awesome phrases and beautiful descriptions and call it a historical/fantasy novel??? Oh wait. That's been done before. It's called post-modern poetry(without the historical fantasy part). I will however, finish the book because it's well-written and it was a birthday gift.

'Still don't know what to think'

entry by...jeter998     updated...Dec 22, '09     spoilers...minor

I think that this book was very unusual in that it kept me reading until the bitter end, even though there was not much plot to speak of. Crowley's prose is indeed beautiful, but I felt as if I kept waiting for the book to begin. I really enjoyed the little interludes into books that the main characters were reading, but those plots kind of just drifted off into space. I also thought that the little "joke" at the end, that he kept mixing up all of the Roses in the small town of Faraways was weird. I was still confused, considering three characters were named Rose, with no distinction. I also did not particularly like the main character, Pierce. He was cold, unemotional and hard to relate to. However, most of the other characters like Spofford and the Roses were really great. Overall, great character development, excellent prose, but leaves you scratching your head, and wondering what exactly happened in those 450 pages or so. I'm still not sure if I will finish the series.

'My thoughts'

This book was an interesting look at lucid dreams and what happens when dreams invade reality. I like the interactions between the characters as they struggle to understand what happened years ago.

When I started the first book, I didn't come out of my room until the beginning of the fourth book. I am only female, and the Edward Cullen portrayed (in the first book at least) sounds extremely appealing.
The writing isn't very good and sometimes a little too cheesy. The fourth book was way too over the top with the plot line...
5 stars for entertainment though! This is something you read and finish over a 10 hour flight..

Yes I caved to the rave of society. I just had to see what all the fuss was about.

When I read them, I absolutely loved them and forced it onto others who also found they loved them.

It was such a beautiful love story and Meyer really got you to feel as if it was you who was falling in love for the very first time, getting a broken heart, getting back together and fighting for that love.

I have struggled to re-read them though. This is only because they made me feel something magical and unique and it just wasn't the same feelings.

You should read it if you haven't already and at least make your own opinions about it. You won't be disappointed.

Daughter of the Forest (The Sevenwaters Trilogy, Book 1)

Juliet Marillier writes historical fantasy. Her novels are set during historical time periods, but she bases her stories around myths. Daughter of the Forest is set on both sides of the Irish Sea, with Sorcha being the heroine of the story (no wonder I just had to read this one, right?). Sorcha is given a seemingly impossible task by the Fair Folk (faeries) to save her six brothers from a curse that has been placed upon them by an evil enchantress.

At first I found the story a little slow; there was a lot of explanatory text and dialogue, yet I couldnt make sense where the story was heading. However, around 200 pages in (keeping in mind this novel is over 500 pages in length) it all started to fall into place and I gradually became more and more engrossed in the story.

I became attached to the characters, so much so that whenever something bad happened I wasnt sure if I would be able to continue reading for fear of another bad thing happening. I didnt want bad things to keep happening, I wanted Sorcha to save her brothers in a timely, ordely, pain-free manner; nothing horrible was allowed to happen to anyone or anything! Of course, it probably wouldnt have been nearly as enticing and exciting without the bad stuff, though. In fact, a week after having finished reading it, I still find myself gazing off into space, thinking about Sorcha, her plight, her brothers, her story...

Daughter of the Forest is the first novel of four in the Sevenwaters Series. The other three novels are Son of the Shadows, Child of the Prophecy, and Heir to Sevenwaters.

'My thoughts'

I enjoyed this book. I liked how Karigan gradually learned about her role in the fight for the kingdom of Sacordia between Zachary and his brother Amilton. I also liked the interactions between the characters Karigan and the friends she makes. I look forward to reading the next book in the series, First Rider's Call.
