'Ella Enchanted'

I have one thing to say about this book, and that is that is is fabulous. The movie didn't live up to the book in so many ways. This is a spin off of the traditional Cinderella story that I read at least twelve times as a kid. DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE MOVIE.

Ok so the basic jist of the story is this: Zane the protagonist of the book, is not really a hero to begin. When we meet him, he is a poor, lonely young man burdened with severe guilt over the death of his mother amongst other things. Searching in a magic shop for a stone which will take him out of his misery starts him on a journey which will change his life forever. The stone which he eventually purchases leads him to his death, and Death literally comes to collect him. Bizarrely Zane ends up taking over the role of Death and while on this journey lays to rest several things which had haunted him in his life and meets many strange characters also.
This book, although technically a science fiction or fantasy novel also has a lot to say about life and death in the real world. It addresses issues such as coming to terms with death, and also coming to terms with heaven hell and all things in between.
It was a very enjoyable read, could not put it down and while on the last couple of chapters have already ordered the next 7 books in the series.
I would highly recommend this book to everybody, not just fantasy/science fiction fans, although having said that anyone who likes Terry Pratchett would surely like this series as it has the same feel of his books, however without so much of the comedy value.
Thrilled about having finally found a new sci fi author worth reading!!

Well to be truthful about the situation I went to see the movie version of this novel starring Brendan Fraser and ever since seeing this I have been dying to read the book.
Luckily I'm about a quarter of the way in now and it is all I hoped it would be. So well written, I'm hanging on the edge of my seat, and just really enjoying the whole fantasy element.
For people who don't know, this book does exactly what it says on the tin, its about a professor and his nephew armed with some provisions and an Icelandic guide who undertake a Journey to the Centre of the Earth. The nephew, being the narrator is the sceptical one about the adventure, not quite believing that it is possible, and quite sure that this is the last journey he will ever undertake.
The Professor on the other hand is a little bit eccentric, and extremely enthusiastic about everything they come across.
Very enjoyable read and will definitely be following up on this author!!
(Always reminds me of Back to the Future)!!

I enjoyed the book but I felt like it was too long and too short at the same time. There was a lot of "oh look a fish" and then never expanding on it and yet there were many of these instances... it almost seemed like the author just wanted to add a lot of cool "antidiluvian" animals.

Interesting plot. Too many mundane details for my liking, and it should've ended fifty pages before it did (a loooong walk across a mountain), but still pretty good.

What a great fantasy book! Based in greek mythological "fact" - and the author obviously did his homework. The characters and the story work well with the mythology and Riordan even adds to it with a modern twist. I can't say enough about this book and I can't wait to read the second in the series. I think the book was much more fun to me now than it would have been if I had read it as a kid because having a background in the gods and myths made the story flow more easily and made it genuinely more interesting. However, I'm sure any young fantasy-fan can pick it up and have a great time.

this was a great way to start a new series, especially one that should pass up Harry Potter. It hooked me as soon as I started the first chapter. by the way, the chapter names are histarical.

'When will it begin???'

I am going to review the book after I have read the entire thing. Normally it is difficult to write a review on a book that one has only read 1/5 of, but ithiss message is really urgent, I assure you. You often hear that such and such book was great, but stick with it because it takes awhile to start. I don't really understand that concept. Why not take out the part "before it all starts" and skip to the good stuff. Sure, we need an introduction, background and motivations for the characters, but how long does that really take? I'm on page 80, and the book hasn't started. Yes, Crowley you write beautifully about poor emo, just-lost-his-job Pierce Moffet and the world of the "Faraways," a random little town in the mountains where everyone seems to lust after their next door neighbor's wife. But honestly, if I wanted to read a book about small-town gossip meets romantic comedy, I would have. I want to know about the world of Aegypt, and why there is more than one history of the world. Oh John Crowley, why must you torture me so!!!

Apparently this book is "very well-written," and "an example of beautiful prose"-I agree wholeheartedly with this. However it doesn't have a plot to speak of(this is from many review on amazon.com). Well, damn. Why didn't I think of writing some awesome phrases and beautiful descriptions and call it a historical/fantasy novel??? Oh wait. That's been done before. It's called post-modern poetry(without the historical fantasy part). I will however, finish the book because it's well-written and it was a birthday gift.

'Still don't know what to think'
entry by...jeter998 updated...Dec 22, '09 spoilers...minor
I think that this book was very unusual in that it kept me reading until the bitter end, even though there was not much plot to speak of. Crowley's prose is indeed beautiful, but I felt as if I kept waiting for the book to begin. I really enjoyed the little interludes into books that the main characters were reading, but those plots kind of just drifted off into space. I also thought that the little "joke" at the end, that he kept mixing up all of the Roses in the small town of Faraways was weird. I was still confused, considering three characters were named Rose, with no distinction. I also did not particularly like the main character, Pierce. He was cold, unemotional and hard to relate to. However, most of the other characters like Spofford and the Roses were really great. Overall, great character development, excellent prose, but leaves you scratching your head, and wondering what exactly happened in those 450 pages or so. I'm still not sure if I will finish the series.

This book was an interesting look at lucid dreams and what happens when dreams invade reality. I like the interactions between the characters as they struggle to understand what happened years ago.

When I started the first book, I didn't come out of my room until the beginning of the fourth book. I am only female, and the Edward Cullen portrayed (in the first book at least) sounds extremely appealing.
The writing isn't very good and sometimes a little too cheesy. The fourth book was way too over the top with the plot line...
5 stars for entertainment though! This is something you read and finish over a 10 hour flight..

Yes I caved to the rave of society. I just had to see what all the fuss was about.
When I read them, I absolutely loved them and forced it onto others who also found they loved them.
It was such a beautiful love story and Meyer really got you to feel as if it was you who was falling in love for the very first time, getting a broken heart, getting back together and fighting for that love.
I have struggled to re-read them though. This is only because they made me feel something magical and unique and it just wasn't the same feelings.
You should read it if you haven't already and at least make your own opinions about it. You won't be disappointed.
