'The Twilight Saga Book 1'
entry by...drneevil updated...Dec 31, '08 spoilers...major
BLURB
About three things I was absolutely positive
First, Edward was a vampire
Second, there was a part of him-and I didn't know how dominant that part may be-that thirsted for my blood
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

I read this during numerous and lengthy train trips around Britain. Very bad in the good way.

'Kids in Gardens'
entry by...forbesbc updated...Aug 31, '08 spoilers...n/a
Pollan writes about the relationships people have with nature through the gardens they design. His grandfather had a fantastic vegetable garden with colorful tomatoes and green peppers. He placed everything in rows and used chemicals as well. Pollan's father didn't have a substantial garden. In fact, much of his father's landscaping was neglected. So, when Pollan dives into a new house in New England, he goes at it with all of his heart. Finding the best tree to plant and gardening techniques, Pollan writes a detailed vision of his garden that explains how we can better relate with nature.

I knew as soon as I read this book that I was addicted. This first novel is magical.

Okay the first time I picked up this book it was in 4th grade, and I'm not in 12th so it's a bit fuzzy. I did enjoy it enough to continue to read them all, I was instantly hooked. Though now that I think about it, as I grew up so did the books, this book almost seems childish compared to the ones now. They are still captivating and a really good read.

The beginning of the very best series in existence. I thought it was about golf when my mom forced it on me. I was eight. Now just thinking about the start of my long love affair with these books makes me tear up. *sob*

There is nothing better than British humor. Added to a scinece fiction story makes it even better.

For some reason this is my favorite of the whole Hitchhikers series. Once again, science fiction and British humor combine to make a terrific tale that is both off-the-wall and entertaining.

'Don't think too hard'
entry by...slowtostart updated...Jan 03, '07 spoilers...none
Fantastic. Absolutely fantastic. The movie was a let down but i expected that. This book is one of those that no matter what the film adaptation, everyone will be unhappy with something because there is no substitute for their own imaginings of the story. I had so much fun reading this, which was refreshing and great because I normally don't enjoy fantasy/scifi stuff.
This will be one of those books I give to people in 20 years time just to see the look of scepticism on their face at such an old book and then to see their pure enjoyment by the time they hit chapter two. This really is a timeless wonder I think and one that you absolutely cannot judge by it's cover (or its fans - they're too varied).

'What's all the fuss?'
entry by...hilary updated...Jan 14, '06 spoilers...none
People keep telling me to read this book, knowing that I have a bit of a penchant for talking about the role of women in the church and the gnostic gospels; I also love to explain the difference between Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene and how they all got conflated by some evil dude.
And naturally I've heard about this book for a very long time... I mean, who hasn't read it yet?
Was I impressed? Yes and no. I really liked all the religious trivia. As a bit of a conspiracy theorist myself, I dig that stuff. But the plot itself? It was actually pretty bad. I can't say I understand why this book has captured the imagination of so many people; frankly its theories aren't new, and its characters are rather wooden. And why the hell isn't it out in paperback yet? That pisses me off - I've been waiting to buy it but instead I just borrowed someone else's copy. Bottom line: unless you want the religion trivia, give this one a pass.

Good action but far-fetched religious rationale, hence the rating of 3.

'Good read but what's with all the hype?'
entry by...Beagle updated...Mar 05, '06 spoilers...n/a
I was surprised about all the hype for this book and, probably for that reason, it disappointed me a bit. I thought it was a good thriller and enjoyed reading it but expected something monumental. It just wasn't. Am I missing something?

A very good book. His other books are enjoyable too, but this is by far the best. Unfortunately, I read this one first and then found the others wanting. If the premise of the book interests you, you might want to read his books in the order they were written.

I must admit that I couldn't put this down. Dan Brown ditched character development for nonstop action, which is sometimes okay. I guess it worked here.

'Don't miss this book...ignore the movie and controversy.'
entry by...readabooktoday updated...Jan 01, '08 spoilers...n/a
This book was so well written I could not stop reading it.
Each chapter left me hanging, wanting more... it was thrilling...
Even if you have seen the movie, please read the book. There is no comparison.
And it is fiction...all the controvery was ridiculous.

Okay I read this purely because everone was having a fit over it. I don't like how people get so freaked out over something that clearly says fiction on it. I loved it, I found it really interesting and somewhat humorus. This is a lovely book, and I don't think anybody should pass it by just because the pope declares it evil. It is a well written piece of art.

The main character speaks to you about his attrocities committed as he climbs higher in the buisness world in the 1980's. Great musical references. It's amazing that the author isn't a serial killer.

DH loves all of Bret Easton Ellis's books and insisted I read this. I don't know how I managed to get through this. The graphic violence was just too much for me. This was a really disturbed book.
