I found the story in this Amelia Peabody mystery to be more convoluted than any of the others in the series. Some of the time I was only partially listening, so that might be my fault. I did like the familial relationship emphasis in this one, though.

I didn't think I'd like this Amelia Peabody mystery as much as I did. I thought I was getting tired of the series, but I really enjoyed this one. As unbelievable and absurd as the others, but I liked how romantic it was, with a new spin in their relationship.
I'm also interested to see how the relationship between Ramses and Neferet develops. How much older will they get over the course of the series?
I thought I'd get sick of this series, but I find them continually enjoyable.

In this Amelia Peabody novel, they follow a map to a lost society hidden in the Sudan, still living as ancient Egyptians lived. This one moved beyond mystery into fantasy- an archaeologists fantasy. That element gave it a slightly stranger, more surreal air than the previous novels. I enjoyed it, as I liked the others.

Enjoyable, but perhaps the most contrived of the Amelia Peabody mysteries so far. I liked that it was a bit different in that it took place in London rather than Egypt, but the old manor house basement and the pagan ritual involving a beautiful young girl- all a bit too cliche for me and not with enough sense of irony.
As with many mysteries, I had a hard time getting into the plot but still enjoyed the characters. I liked the addition of Ramses' cousins, who added a slight bit of depth to his character.
Seems like it would have been quite an enjoyable thing to be rich in Victorian London.

I liked this Amelia Peabody mystery because of the continuing plot line from the previous book- the master criminal. He's in love with Amelia, and everyone's figured that out except her.
I really liked the ambiguity of her almost-choice to join with the master criminal just before her husband rescues her. It added a depth to her character that I wasn't feeling before.
Made me want to go ahead and read the next one right away!

I must be sure not to move through the Amelia Peabody books too quickly. They are very fun- I like the description of their family life and Amelia's super-sensible take on everything. But they are all about murder, mummies and curses that turn out to be evil criminals out to rob their tombs. I think that after several of these books in quick succession I might feel they are formulaic. We'll see as I move through the series. This one is noted by the inclusion of Ramses, their son, who turns out to be incredibly obnoxious.

I read the first book in this series some time ago, and really enjoyed it. I've decided to read the whole series. I fell in love with Amelia Peabody, the independent, intelligent, demanding and generous Victorian woman. I this novel, she is married to Emerson and they have a son. The son ("it") is left with family in England while Amelia and Emerson return to Egypt for a season of excavating and a tomb investigation. They must work together to save the tomb and discover the murderer. Typical murder mystery in an enjoyable exotic setting. I enjoyed it as much as the first one.
