'Language Arts'

entry by...lleon556     updated...Jul 28, '10     spoilers...n/a

I read this book for the first time to prepare for using it in my 5th grade Language Arts class. Not only did I really enjoy it but my students really got into it as well.

I like that is has some historical ficition of the time period but isn't focused on that for the entire book. I liked the character development and the fact that there were not an overwhelming amount of negative events focus on through out the entire book.

This collection of short stories has been sitting on my shelf for about a year. I love J.D. Salinger, but I suppose I was a bit leery of reading his short stories, as I've only read his novel The Catcher in the Rye and his dual-novella Franny and Zooey (Both of which I highly recommend). I had nothing to worry about, though. These short stories - admittedly, some more effective than others - are pure Salinger. They're witty, sarcastic, sad, entertaining, and original. I particulary enjoyed the elliptical stories (the first and last stories in the collection) "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" and "Teddy." They were incredibly moving and fantastically written. I will definitely read most of these stories, if not the whole collection, many times over.

I would call this Salinger's second-finest book, after Catcher in the Rye. The good stories are really, truly good, but there are a few weaker ones thrown in there as well. In fact, my favorite one, A Perfect Day For Bananafish, happens to be the first one. With the bar set that high, it was a bit of a letdown to read eight more stories that fell short of it by various amounts.

My goal for 2009 is to enter every book I read this year and write at least a short review. In addition for every new book I enter, I am going to enter one book I've read in the past that I enjoyed.

This time it's East of Eden. Probably one of my favorite books all time.

This is a tender and stark tale about the struggle to find personal goodness in the midst of evil. Their is no one like Steinbeck for setting a mood. In this book he tells the story of how the generations of a family battle for love, identity and acceptance.

I read East of Eden about a year ago and it's been a long time that a book affected me so much. After that I set out to read every book Steinbeck has written. Grapes of Wrath was amazing, and to sound extremely pretentious, a tour de force, but nothing has beaten East of Eden so far. If you're interested in checking out books and authors that influenced Steinbeck, and people that he in turn influenced, check out this link:

Beautiful book. Reminded me why I love Salinger. This will probably be one of few books which I read multiple times.

Pretty amazing, especially coming out of the early 20th Century. Hilarious in his obsession with 'the C word' and sex and all the dirty diseases that come with it. Also, funny to watch Miller denounce the practice of putting so much importance on the literary geniuses like Goethe, Emerson, Tennyson, etc - but then watch as he quotes them left and right within his own prose. It's a wonderful experiment with language and stream of consciousness, though. Definitely worth being named a classic, even if a bit bizarre.

I can't get over how awesome this is? Alison Bechdel called it 'a scathing and meticulously documented autobiographical triumph', which is VERY TRUE.

Graphic novel. Great images that just enhance and play along with the story. It's always amazing to me how an author can write literally two or three sentences on a page in a graphic novel, and you can still feel it tug at your heart strings. Great book. Wacky family for sure, with funny and serious elements.
